About Barbara Vaughn

Barbara Vaughn is an artist whose work transcends traditional and preconceived notions of photography. Her exploration of the parameters of vision and cognition renders images that straddle  abstraction and realism, utilizing the transformational qualities of water.

Vaughn’s artistic process is highly intuitive, allowing her to explore themes of metamorphosis, transience, and perception, with nods to Surrealism and Cubism. Each piece represents a unique time stamp, archiving a fleeting moment that can never be recreated or repeated. With her signature approach to camera-based abstraction, she challenges the conventions of photography and encourages analysis of her mesmerizing images.

Through her work, Vaughn seeks to stir a sense of wonder and curiosity, prompting audiences to reevaluate their initial interpretations and engage their imaginations. Her art is not just a visual experience; it is an invitation to reflect and celebrate the beauty and power of nature’s possibilities.

Barbara Vaughn is a fine-art photographer based in New York City, Connecticut, and Greece. She is represented by Dolby Chadwick Gallery in San Francisco, CA, FriesenSolo in Sun Valley, ID, Quogue Gallery in Quogue, NY, and KMR Arts in Washington, CT and her artwork is in numerous noteworthy private collections. In the last decade, her signature waterscapes and other photographic series have been the subject of 30 solo and group shows in the U.S. and internationally. Vaughn graduated from Princeton University and attended the International Center of Photography in NYC, among other photographic and multi-disciplinary programs.

“My desire is to present the beauty of water in a visual puzzle, highlighting the tensions between reality and abstraction, the familiar and the unrecognizable, the physical facts and the mysteries only a camera can capture. You’re invited to discover the clues.” – Barbara Vaughn
